Leading - Edge Technology Counts

The trail traffic counter uses two units: a sending unit, which emits a harmless infrared beam of light to the receiving unit. The receiving unit detects presence of the beam. Then the beam is blocked the counter in the receiver is incremented by one. The circuitry has been added to eliminate false counts. Thus falling debris, flying birds and swinging arms, etc. will not cause extra counts.

This two-unit design has many advantages over counters using a retro-reflector design. The units can cover a much wider path than the reflector type. This allows the units to be further off the trail to reduce tampering by curious individuals and vandals. In addition, it will accurately count in foul weather, such as rain, fog, sleet, and snow. It is not fooled by light colored clothing, shiny objects, headlights, flashlight beams or sunlight.
